Sorry, this video is a bit long, but I wanted to go over as much as I could about it. Correction: It’s not Tomboy in the top bar, it’s Gnote, the C++ clone of the original Mono/C# app. Sorry about that. Thanks for watching! @thisweekinlinux I’m sorry that you have to deal with people like that. It’s quite likely that the person who you’re responding to is OSGUI himself. You’re a nice guy. You don’t deserve stuff like that. :(

  2. thisweekinlinux says:

@baby1234crazydude I have nothing to do with it. It’s all Tim. “LinuxDefender” is OSGUIShow’s account, and he’s sticking videos on it to attack me and taking my words from 1.5 years ago out of context.
    Happy Holidays!

  3. baby1234crazydude says:

Fuck you FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU stop annoying OSGUI asshol bithass dick face fuckasas

@ytuser13082011 I did not, and I’m not dead yet. It’s just a flesh wound.
I used to be a YouTube partner, so my videos all had ads on them, meaning they wouldn’t play through HTML5. Now that Google has decided to cast me out for no reason, my videos can all play with HTML5, ad-free. Benefit for some, kick in the balls to me. :)

  5. ytuser13082011 says:

Wow, I was immediately dropped to HTML5 and it didn’t work all that bad [well, it fullscreen was limited to browser's windows, but whatever].

Now, did you choose HTML5 for your video on purpose, dead thisweeklinux author?

  6. thisweekinlinux says:

    @spandatass thanks so much!

  7. spandatass says:

I’m new to the Linux world and I appreciate all the videos you have posted.

    @TheArnabDas
You know… that’s exactly right. I switched over to Linux almost a year ago(recently without a dual boot) and at the start it was nerve racking because it was new… who likes change right? The transition was seamless because everyone in the Linux community was/is so helpful… and it’s easy. The problem with Linux in my opinion is the misconception that you have to be computer savvy…BS. Not the case at all… in fact… Linux is 10 times easier than Windows.

Linux is a really good idea and they have some great programs and features, but this video kind of underlines why its not as main stream as windows or mac. I’m not hatin or anything (I ran Ubuntu for a while and loved it), but the average consumer just doesnt want to have to deal with programing or updating problems….just a thought.

  10. NoNameEntered says:

    @AdyGudus su -c ’somecommand’

  11. EmpInd says:

The way you cutted the spaces between words reminds me to MaxHeadroom.. Haha

  12. knowmorecomp says:

The Linux community is awesome, always glad to help users out.
I bet if you had the same problem with Apple or Microsoft programs, your problem will probably have taken a month to solve not 10 minutes.
    See the difference!
Great video btw and i will switch back to Linux pretty soon, i haven’t betrayed it.
It’s me wick94 in case you still havent recognized me, lol

I believe there’s some sort of DNS issue. The site itself is reachable by IP address, but it keeps giving me a “Gateway Timeout” DNS error. I’m talking to my site host trying to figure out what I can do.

  14. TheArnabDas says:

this is exactly why i love linux. its all in the community! something one never experiences with paid OSes.

btw, great intro! :) also, ur website’s not working, is there something wrong?

  15. mpalen19 says:

    True.

  16. thisweekinlinux says:

mpalen19: yes, it can be a bit time-consuming to reinstall all your apps, but it’s really no different than doing a clean install of Ubuntu or Windows or anything else. :)

  17. MasaruGamer says:

    TRUE COMMUNITY

Something MS and Apple don’t have.

  18. mpalen19 says:

Great vid! I just downloaded the i686 ISO of Fedora 12. So far I like what I see? What sucks is having to re-download all of my apps and games again which is gonna take a while. This is what is stopping me from switching over… Oh and also the fact that the new Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx will be out.

  19. ThingsontheWeb says:

I’m actually going to run fedora this Spring.
RPM seams like a better package in the community.

    Plus, it’s Redhat … great

  20. thisweekinlinux says:

you can use sudo in Fedora as well, you just have to add your user account to the Wheel group, I believe.

  21. AdyGudus says:

ai giv cupple of 4 refresh in page and in fine its worck prfect… the rezolution its default…i dont changed…

Sorry for my bad english…i come from Romania but i love your video

I have a question for you: In Ubuntu for to giv a root comand you tipe sudo apt-get install for example but in Fedora i notice you must first tipe:
su, then enter password heat enter then only after that you enter your command. Its a way for a single command line as root?

  22. thisweekinlinux says:

I’ve noticed this going on with a few videos at the moment. Have you tried a different resolution?

  23. AdyGudus says:

your video dont worck: An error occurred, please try again later.

  24. UbuntuHelpGuy says:

Love your videos mate. Good job!

  25. 0127012076 says:

hai, do you know where in the link for me to get fedora 13 dailup driver or installer..
    could any body help…
im new in fedora, thank you.

  26. thisweekinlinux says:

@ygotcgftw well, it looks like Gnome. :P Should be a similar interface across most Gnome-based distributions.

  27. ygotcgftw says:

wow this look like ubuntu 9.10

  28. thisweekinlinux says:

@daeamarth Watching it right now. :)

  29. daeamarth says:

Lightweight? LOL Go look up “daeamarth acer netbook”

  30. thisweekinlinux says:

@mguilmot Exactly. Looking back, it’s amazing the amount of growth Linux distros have made in just the last few years.

  31. thisweekinlinux says:

@mguilmot Yeah, that’s a good point, but the bugs they’re waiting to fix, if I understand correctly, are really specific and mostly related to NFS.

  32. mguilmot says:

I’ve never found the redhat based distro’s lightweight. I’ve used lots of distributions in the past, including Debian and Slackware, and they looked a lot faster, but then again, they’re a bit tougher to use (especially 6-7 years ago). When I compare Fedora now comparing with my Mandrake 8.2 years ago, we’ve come a LONG way. Nowadays everyone should be able to use linux (Fedora or Ubuntu e.g.) without any problems. Except maybe gamers who need a Win box for their games…

  33. mguilmot says:

@thisweekinlinux I don’t think it’s sad. If you look at their release policies, you should just be happy that they postponed the release. I prefer to have the release a week or two later than having one where you will need to use workarounds to make certain things work :-)

  34. thisweekinlinux says:

@mguilmot Yeah, kinda sad they had to push back again, but it’s probably for the best.
I know I used the DVD when I installed my laptop with Fedora, and it was not a problem at all.
“Light weight” is sort of a relative term. Gnome is lightweight compared to KDE, but it’s bloated compared to Xfce, Fluxbox, etc.

  35. mguilmot says:

The final release is scheduled later this month (the 25th if all goes well).
Have to say, if you want the least problems with the install, use the full CD’s or DVD’s. I installed 12 first with a live CD and had a few troubles getting all to work. With the DVD all went perfect just with the install. Have no idea what is different, but there is a difference. Still love Fedora ever since the very first release years ago.
But you cannot call it light weight though :-)

  36. thisweekinlinux says:

    @gangstabadboy23 really? awesome!

  37. gangstabadboy23 says:

Oh My Good i Just STARTED TO LOVE LINUX!!! <3

  38. MrSebzi says:

    @MrSebzi cool :D

  39. thisweekinlinux says:

@MrSebzi I’ll admit, it’s sort of difficult to get going, but if you follow the Beginner’s Guide, it’s not too bad. I’m actually doing that right now

  40. MrSebzi says:

@thisweekinlinux cool thx the only thing i don’t like about the arch linux is the installasjon prosses but all in all a great os :)

  41. thisweekinlinux says:

@MrSebzi no problem :) I like Fedora and Ubuntu pretty well, but I’m actually trying out Arch on my laptop right now, and it’s sort of awesome. Very lightweight and you only get what you tell it to install, nothing more, nothing less.

  42. MrSebzi says:

@thisweekinlinux thx for replying :) and whats youre favourit linux distro? just want to know :P

  43. thisweekinlinux says:

@MrSebzi that’s entirely up to you. I would definitely suggest trying it in a virtualbox first to make sure you’re comfortable with the way to install new software and configure the system, then make sure to make a backup of your existing system before you install it, if you decide to.

  44. MrSebzi says:

i really want to try this (not in a virutuel box) do you think i should switch from ubuntu to this? (sorry for my crappy english) :P

  45. thisweekinlinux says:

@H4×0r18 I actually went over my reasons in my second Ask TWIL video, if you’d like to watch it. Much easier than typing it over. :)

It’s definitely possible to upgrade to the latest release from a beta.

  46. H4x0r18 says:

I’ve been really think about switching from Ubuntu to this. Just because Fedora looks more clean and appealing for my needs. Also Fedora isn’t bloated with games and such, just the important apps. What are your reasons for Fedora? And do you if its possible to upgrade from beta to latest release? Also nice Dr. Pepper pants. I have the same kind, lol I should definitely buy your t-shirt and then have my dr.pepper pants on. ;-)

  47. thisweekinlinux says:

@kaddy01980 Good luck! Fedora 12 is a great distro that I’ve been running for a few months now, and the beta for Fedora 13 comes out today!

  48. kaddy01980 says:

arghhh fuck it…. i’m gonna try out Fedora 12…. i’ve never really given Fedora a good run before but i’ve used just about every other popular distro for quite a long period of time…. wish me luck… kaboom! :P
