Official Ubuntu Netbook ‘remix’ Promo ad

A rarely seen official advert for Ubuntu Netbook Remix (as it was known back then) commissioned by Canonical.

Even though it’s outdated by Netbook standards, the Asus Eee PC 701 was reliable and durable companion during my travels through Southeast Asia and Australia. Although I would recommend the Series 901 for those interested in mobile computing, a quick look at the 701 gives a good baseline comparison for what you might look for in a Netbook. The standard 701 features: – Xandros (Linux) operating system – 7″ screen (800×480 resolution) – 900 MHz Celeron processor – 512Mb RAM (upgradable to 1Gb) – 4Gb Solid State Hard Drive – 802.11b/g WiFi – Ethernet Port – 3 USB 2.0 ports – Headphone and Microphone jack – Monitor Output Port – Expandable SD Card Slot – 1.3 megapixel integrated webcam – Kensington Lock – 4 cell 5200 mAH Battery with small battery charger – Neoprene Carry Case – Listed Battery Life is 3.5 hours but my own tests have yielded 2h15m under heavy usage This laptop worked great during my trip. I only moved on to the 901 because of the small screen and the inability to install programs with the stock Xandros operating system. This video was shot with a Canon G9 on loan.

Installing Windows XP on a Netbook Via USB (Acer Aspire One)

If you have issues with this, try the alternative install (scroll down a bit): www.duncsweb.com Note: Installation may vary with laptop model and flash drive, you may encounter issues, this is just what I did. Here I talk about how I installed Windows XP on my Acer Aspire One A110 with just a USB Thumb Drive (Kingston DataTraveller 100 1GB). This is aimed at a how-to for anyone in a similar situation. This was done using the USB Multiboot Tool (Credit and Kudos to the authors). www.boot-land.net

Moblin v2.1 on a Netbook

Ive been playing a little with the latest Moblin release this afternoon and Im actually thinking of trying to run it full-time on a netbook. Theres a few holes yet, but it does offers me much of what Im looking for in a smartbook — a lightweight operating system and good browsing experience. My wireless broadband modem isnt working, nor is my sound or my Bluetooth, so theres a few gotchas just yet. The Bluetooth might be easily fixable in my netbook BIOS, but no sound on the Toshiba NB205 is a reported known bug. In this 11 minute video, I think youll see why Im walking away impressed. The user interface is intuitive, although it will take some getting used to, and the overall environment is fluid and snappy. Bear in mind that Im running a live image from a USB drive, so an actual installation should perform even better. Maybe its time to turn the Toshiba into a triple-booter: Windows XP, Windows 7 and Moblin!

I was looking for a decent, inexpensive netbook to use while I travel for work and this little HP Mini 110 is perfect for what I need while I’m on the go. I’m running Fedora 16 on it and it’s flawless. Everything works from the VGA port to the webcam and audio. Fedora installed and ran flawlessly right out of the box.
