Standalone Linux on PS3 Slim (27c3 demo update)

This is what the fail0verflow 27c3 demo *should* have looked like. As it turns out, the reason why we didn’t have working video and had to fall back to an SSH demo was because this Slim is too new to run version 3.15 (what we tried to run), since it does not correctly support this particular revision of the RSX. So here’s the same demo, except with version 3.41, which does work.

Bodhi Linux v0.1.6 Rc2 is a nice looking minimalistic distro which uses Enlightenment desktop environment. Instead cramming your system full of unnecessary programs, Bodhi provides you with just Firefox 4 beta 11 and Synaptic. You can select the applications you want easily through Synaptic package manager. Bodhi have supplied a nice easy to use Setup Wizard to give easy customisation of the Enlightenment desktop, allowing you to choose from: Basic, Compiz enabled, Laptop, or Netbook styles. Theres also some nice looking wallpapers/themes supplied. Enlightenment has very low system requirements making this Distro ideal for older lower spec machines. However its only available in 32bit version, which makes in unsuitable for higher spec 64bit machines. Its based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Review done in Virtualbox 4.04 Sorry about the bad edit near the end, I had a coughing fit and ended up with hiccups.

where did you get the sata to usb connector?

  3. curtmack says:

@sammyharvest You try to put it in and it doesn’t go in. You turn it over and it still doesn’t go in. Then finally you turn it over one more time and it works.

  4. sammyharvest says:

@curtmack ?? please explain this theory i do not fully understand

  5. mightynorteno says:

what do use to connect ps3 hdd to pc?

  6. o0smokingmonk0o says:

  7. StevenJHD says:

    @driverx241 linux isn’t made for game….

  8. MrRanting says:

@curtmack i dnt understand what you mean

  9. UnknowCivilboy says:

a game specialist said that the main distinguishing feature between xbox 360 and ps3 is that the xbx we have a single graphics processor for all the hard work and the work is divided ps3 to multiple processors.
conclusion: puts more trust in that employee would have time to think about a solution that would work and another that just were not able to divide their tasks and consequently a more rapid effect

  10. UnknowCivilboy says:

creating an algorithmic mechanism for protecting the ps3 could open a loophole in the system for entering unlock codes.

  11. UnknowCivilboy says:

a code closer to the machine as it could force the assembly hardware
and assist in the analysis of both control system, in the issue public key, as its internal

  12. driverx241 says:

    Does it play games?

  13. phillleb says:

@theevilmuppet I mean should not. Sorry for bad english.

  14. Varstahl says:

@milkkart months actually. And if they let OtherOS be, all of this wouldn’t have happened. Piracy is a consequence, not the reason.

  15. GoldenKevin says:

    You win for using KDE.

  16. milkkart says:

@Blakwulf seems no one who knew what they were doing was trying to crack it or they weren’t trying very hard. was, what, about a year between otherOS getting removed and this happening? still it wasn’t cracking to run games that was popularised, its cracking for linux.

anyway, time to scour ebay for ps3s, with mythTV or something PS3 would make a nice HTPC.

Thank you for your efforts! This device would be perfect as a personal rendercluster if it can run Linux fully working! =D

God dammit keep still. Mirrors edge has shit on you buddy. Otherwise great stuff

  23. SOF006 says:

    @quidsup No problem :)

  24. quidsup says:

@SOF006 Cool I hadn’t realised it was out already. 0.1.7 was working a lot better than version I reviewed here. I’ll get on and take a look at the Final release. Cheers

  25. SOF006 says:

Im in the middle of downloading bodhi 1.0 (final release) Hope its good! This video looked promising even though this is RC

  26. experimental0000 says:

@maw88ify it sounded odd at first until I read what it was meant for then it made sense. Definitely not a desktop distro you’d want to use to replace windows with (non security training type of use)

  27. maw88ify says:

@quidsup The web site says “Damn Vulnerable Linux (DVL) is everything a good Linux distribution isn’t. Its developers have spent hours stuffing it with broken, ill-configured, outdated, and exploitable software that makes it vulnerable to attacks. ” The goal it to show you what not to do, and how to fix it .

  28. quidsup says:

@maw88ify I’ll pop on on my todo list. Got a few other reviews to do first…

  29. maw88ify says:

Next do a video on “damn vulnerable linux” … Damn Vulnerable Linux is the most complete training environment for IT security with over 500.000 downloads.

  30. fuzzypeg7 says:

@iamkells How rude. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. But you obviously think everyone’s entitled to YOUR opinion. You need to learn some manners. If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.

  31. quidsup says:

    @OSyTim Cheers mate

  32. slughappy1 says:

Synaptic didn’t show all the possible packages because you need to hit reload first.

  33. OSyTim says:

    good video mate

  34. iamkells says:

@quidsup You are doing this as a review which implies some level of knowledge or expertise. You should have named this video “Distro quick look”, or “first impressions from a new user”, not Distro Review.

  35. Jeffhoogland says:

@quidsup Stable release is set for the end of March (the 27th).

Also I’d say 99% of users are going to load up the default webrowser on a distro at least once – if they do so in Bodhi they will learn piles about Bodhi and Enlightenment via the quick start guide plus find links to other places to go about learning even more.

  36. quidsup says:

@iamkells if it isn’t obvious or simple enough then hows a new user going to find out about it

  37. quidsup says:

@Jeffhoogland I will next review. Have you got a date when you’ll hit full release?

  38. quidsup says:

@Jeffhoogland Sorry I missed that. I normally open up Firefox, not sure why I missed it out this time.
I’ll make sure I include it on the next review

  39. iamkells says:

do your research and learn how to operate the distro before doing a review. This was almost useless. You covered almost non of the features of enlightenment or Bohdi for that matter. Reeks of laziness.

  40. Jeffhoogland says:

Oh also one more comment – you really should install it on an actual machine before you comment on boot time. Everyone who has used Bodhi has commented it is one of the fastest start times around.

  41. Jeffhoogland says:

@quidsup I see you gave us a black dot in installing software… Did you take a look at the quick start guide at all that is the default home page in Firefox? It details a lot of useful things new users would need to know about Bodhi – including our Software Center – Which is one of the easiest methods of installing pieces of software around.

    Thanks for the review!
    ~Jeff Hoogland

  42. Jeffhoogland says:

@quidsup Why is it going to take a couple years to see a decent version because of sticking to the LTS? LTS means long term support – with all the back ported software in the Bodhi repository you get the LTS benefits with none of the drawbacks.

  43. Elit3M1ke says:

@quidsup install it natively on a machine and you will see

  44. quidsup says:

@YourFreeTutorials One of my friends made it. Unfortunately the site its on is down at the moment

  45. quidsup says:

@Elit3M1ke I don’t believe its all the fault of virtualbox. Ubuntu and Windows work absolutely fine under the same conditions.

  46. quidsup says:

@Destroyer64464 No idea about hackintosh, sorry

  47. quidsup says:

@ilightbite Totally agree. Shame they are sticking to LTS releases, it could be a couple of years before we see a decent version
